A little bit of help with magento menu and jquery

I feel bad for spamming this forum so much, but there is one last thing I really need help with.
Few days back I asked about left navigation on this forum and you suggested 2 options, I deicided to use vertical navigation with css classes
I Found this tutorial on how to add jquery acordion menu effect
It works but there is one small problem.
When I’m in homepage of the site, left navigation doesn’t work at all but when I navigate further into site (using top navigation), left menu with works.
I think know where the problem is, but I don’t know how to fix it.
In homepage vertnav outputs this code:

In homepage there is no sub
- and it’s probably why it doesn’t work.

I’ve added small images of how navigation looks in homepage (top.jpg) and in other page (sub.jpg).
