Adding lots of associated products to configurable

New to this magento stuff and to me it seems that this is something that might have an add on available.

Anyways like you and other same problem (and others) with configurable products.

But this is how I see the task and it aint so bad. (But new and so may have got it all wrong!)

Lets pretend bikes.

Create a mega (very top level) parent of type configurable product – “Core Bike”
Use this to create the next level down by using duplicate of type configurable for different bikes – “Mountain Bike Base” etc and adjust the data as needed
These are only used to then create real parents never for the actual catalogue

Create an actual to be seen configurable product by duplicating the “Mountain Bike Base” – and creating say “Mountain Bike ABC”
Adjust the data as needed
Then from WITHIN this create the actual variants (green – red – blue etc) – there is the screen in the centre of the page for Associated Products that makes this pretty fast to add them
Then you need to edit the data for the individual products

(At various time you have to set bit to do with being visible etc but I will leave you to work that one out since it is a hands on job)

I think if you try this you will find it pretty fast and LOADS better AND more focussed and so less error prone than creating the variants (to be) first.

Give it a go and let me know how you get on since you may find some tips to speed it up more.
