Automatic image resolution change

I have just started setting up my own site. Got a bit fed up designing ecommerce sites for clients then watch them go away and make loads of money.
Decided that a way forward for me is to use high-margin low volume sales by dropship using a Magento based site.
I have used, both for design purposes and running my wife’s online shop, Ecommerce Templates (ECT) so have experience in designing, implementing and running online shops.
I was impressed with Magento’s available facilities and ease of set up.
I have run into a few problems which I hope someone here may help me with.
My main problem at the moment is that I prepare (using my graphics program) good quality, properly sized graphics for the main (500px x 500px), small (135px x 135px) and thumbnail (56px x 56px) images which I then upload.
However, to my dismay I have found out that Magento then changes these properly formed images using a poor algorithm leaving my good quality images to appear really pixellated.
Is there some way to stop this happening?
Secondly, is there a good clear explanation of the directory tree structure used in Magento?
Thirdly, there seems to be issues with Magento using a cache (I think) which then not cleared thus slowing the site down.
I also have to admit that the main Magento forum isn’t very useful at all. I never really had any useful answers to my problems.
Like all newbies to a platform, I ask a lot of questions until I get myself sorted out and then move on to helping others. There seems to be some sort of disdain shown to newbies on the main site.
I was glad I found this site! I am based in Scotland so was happy to see that you are UK based.
Look forward to hearing from anyone
