Can the front / home page not show products but information

Hi,

I am a new to Magento and i was wondering if there was a way or setting to make the front / home page to static page for content, rather than showing items?

I want to be able to also intergrate some other features into the site like blog feeds etc, is this easy to add in via PHP?
