Cannot Export 5500 products from store due to memory limit..?

Hi, I have 5500 products in my store and when I try to export I get the message:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 16 bytes) in /home/mysite/public_html/lib/Zend/Db/Adapter/Abstract.php on line 982

I have created a new php5.ini and placed in the root of my server, where my magento store is installed, with the following attributes for

memory_limit = 256M

max_execution_time = 72000

Can anyone advise if i’m doing anything wrong or how I can export my products from the store.
