Compiler Status Disabled?

Hi all
Just checking through some config setting on my magento installation and noticed that under Tools>Compliation by compiler status is showing as disabled ( although the compilation state is shown as Compiled.

And the following error messages are shown at the top of the screen

Directory “/var/www/vhosts/dougalsden.co.uk/httpdocs/includes” must be writeable
File “/var/www/vhosts/dougalsden.co.uk/httpdocs/includes/config.php” must be writeable

I am concerned that this could be impacting the speed on my site as I have been reading some forum posts about compilation helping to speed things up.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please.
