Date of Birth required for specific products

Hello

I am looking for a way to add the dob field to customer checkout for specific products.
I have already managed to do this – however I am facing some issues – here is my current setup:

1. Date of Birth was set to “optional” via backend.
2. File templatecustomerwidgetdob.phtml was edited so dob field will be required even if set to “optional” via backend.
3. File customeronepagebilling.phtml was edited to show dob field only if products with specific attribute are present in cart.

The problem with this setup is, that dob will be required for new customer registrations and for returning customers who want to edit their customer data – suddenly they will have to enter their date of birth. I was able to modify appcodelocalMageCustomerBlockWidgetDob.php to allow for a second dob template to be loaded on these two pages (customer/form/register.phtml and customer/form/edit.phtml) but for some reason, date of births entered during checkout would now no longer be displayed in the backend.

Has anybody managed to do what I am trying here or has asomebody an idea, how I could proceed? Thank you!
