Display ‘Total orders’ and ‘Orders total’ in Customers grid

Hi,
I’m currently on Magento CE 1.4.2 and need to assign customers to a group (a VIP group) based on their total spend and their total number of orders. Can anyone advise on how to display these columns in the Customers grid? (Customers > Manage Customers)
Once the columns are displayed I would like to be able to arrange customers by them, select however many customers, then assign all selected customers to an existing group.
I know these 2 fields of information exist somewhere because they are used to display the top 5 customers in both senses on the Dashboard.
I have limited programming knowledge and have asked developers to do this for us however I need it done quicker than they can provide, and have a feeling it’s something simple.
Thanks,
Gee.
