Editing cart leads to loss of checkout information

This is offtopic, but I do not want to open a new thread. I use SVN to edit files, if I install an extension via the magento admin will this make the files from the extension unavailable with SVN?

What I want to know is, how do I manually install a magento extension? Would it suffice to just copy the files in app/code/community/Nameofextension ?
