How often do YOU upgrade versions?

Hi,
I’m working slowly on a migration to Magento over the next six months with my ecommerce site(s).
My question for the community is how often do YOU really feel the need to upgrade? Do you do it “just because”, or because there is some type of critical security threat that leaves you no other choice.
From having spoken with hosting and developer companies, it seems maybe only once a year an upgrade is needed. And even then – do it on a staging server and make sure all of your extensions/custom themes are compatible first before rolling out to production server.
It’s my understanding Magento is pretty”secure”, so if you have everything working as expected, is even ONCE a year too often to upgrade?
