Magento – suitable for an affiliate site?

Yes, and Magento handles what it calls “Layered Navigation” very easily. That is, constraining by multiple attributes: brand, size, color, cost, etc.
One of our clients uses a drop-ship method to pass orders from their site to affiliates. This is complex to set up, but I doubt another commerce platform does it any easier.
As for Magento being overkill… I’ll say this: Be prepared for the steepest learning curve of your life.
