menu tab when hover help with

I need some help trying to go from compare 1 to compare 2 image ( see attachment )

i know i have to make some changes in the css file but im not sure where to look for the code and someone suggested i use a sprite image instead…. my other questions is. Can i make the image change once the mouse hovers over the menu tab? if so how can i do that. i already have 2 separate sprite images.. the active one when its hover and the regular base one. any guidance would be greatly appreciated
