navigation tree of categories on Home page

Hi All !
I am beginner and new to magento…

Can we have navigation tree of categories on Home page as we have on category page. (Please find screen 1 in attachment)

What I already did is as follow:-
In catalog.xml ( appdesignfrontenddefaultdefaultlayout ), under tag I commented

–>

and added same block under under , so that I could have navigation block onto home page.

I got navigation block onto homepage but navigation tree of categories is not expanded as we have on category page. (Please find screen 2 in attachment). Must be missing something over here….

( Please refer screen 3 in attachment ) When we click on “categories(34)”, then we have that what I want without giving a click on “categories(34)”.

Although I have expanded version of Navigation tree of categories but it application does not redirect respective page if any of the category is being clicked……..

Please please help me out.
