Uploaded product images not appearing

I have a problem with my Magento installation in that any product images that are uploaded are not appearing either in the backend or the frontend. The images have uploaded correctly, but if I look at the properties they are being called from cache folders that do not exist (have not been created). If I manually create the folder with the images then they will appear.

There are no problems with the ownership or permissions of the Media folder and I have tried disabling the htaccess file in the Media folder as well as refreshing all the caches via the cache control in the admin panel.

Could anyone suggest a solution?
